Submitted: Apr 11, 2013; Accepted: May 18, 2013; Published: Jul 20, 2013 Abstract: This article focuses on the estimation of population mean of a sensitive variable by using additive scrambling technique. The proposed estimator requires two responses from each respondent. The proposed estimator is relatively more efficient than the existing unbiased estimators utilizing the randomized or scrambled data. From the privacy point of view comparative studies can be conducted which is a direction for further research on randomized response models.

On Estimation of Mean and Sensitivity Level of a Stigmatizing Variable Using Two Stage Scrambling
Procuring reliable data on sensitive/stigmatizing variables is a tricky issue in many social surveys. When questioned through direct questioning respondents may report evasive answers on such sensitive variables. Consequently, a bias creeps into the estimates based on evasive answers. Different indirect questioning methods such as Item Count Technique, Three Cards Method and Randomized Response...
متن کاملCorrection: Additive and Subtractive Scrambling in Optional Randomized Response Modeling
This article considers unbiased estimation of mean, variance and sensitivity level of a sensitive variable via scrambled response modeling. In particular, we focus on estimation of the mean. The idea of using additive and subtractive scrambling has been suggested under a recent scrambled response model. Whether it is estimation of mean, variance or sensitivity level, the proposed scheme of esti...
متن کاملAn Improved Estimation Procedure of the Mean of a Sensitive Variable Using Auxiliary Information
Let Y be the variable under study, a sensitive variable which can’t be observed directly. Let X is a non – sensitive auxiliary variable which is strongly correlated with Y. Let S be a scrambling variable independent of the study variable Y and the auxiliary variable X. The usual additive model used for gathering information on quantitative sensitive variable is due to Himmelfarb & Edgell [3]. T...
متن کاملImproved Estimation of Mean in Randomized Response Models
The present investigation considers the problem of estimating the mean of a sensitive quantitative variable μA in a human population survey, using the scrambled response technique suggested by Ryu, Kim, Heo and Park (On stratified randomized response sampling, Model Assisted Statistics and Application 1(1), 31–36, 2005–2006). Specifically, using the prior estimate (or guessed mean) of the mean ...
متن کاملEstimation of Finite Population Variance Using Scrambled Responses in the Presence of Auxiliary Information
In this paper, a new estimator for estimating the finite population variance of a sensitive variable based on scrambled responses collected using a randomization device is introduced. The estimator is then improved by using known auxiliary information. The estimators due to Das and Tripathi (1978: Sankhya) and Isaki (1983: JASA) are shown to be special cases of the proposed estimator. Numerical...
